Standing water flowing from an underground water main leak across the sidewalk and into the street in Alamo Heights, TX.

Sometimes a water leak announces itself with a dripping faucet or a spike in your water bill. Other times, it quietly turns a flower bed into a muddy swamp while thousands of gallons of water disappear underground.

That's exactly what happened when Rapid Plumbing was called to an apartment complex in Alamo Heights, TX for what initially appeared to be a mysterious leak in the landscaping.

By the time we arrived, water had already saturated the flower bed beside the front entrance. It had spread across the lawn, flowed onto the sidewalk, and continued into the street. What looked like a simple leak on the surface was hiding a much bigger problem below.

Our first priority was stopping the water flow to prevent additional water loss and damage. Once the water was shut off, we began excavating where the leak appeared to be originating. Almost immediately, we realized this wasn't going to be an ordinary excavation.

Massive tree roots had completely taken over the area. Combined with dense rock and heavily saturated soil, every shovel full became more challenging than the last. To safely reach the damaged pipe, we brought in an excavator to remove the larger roots and expose the underground water main.

As the excavation continued, the real culprit finally revealed itself.

A severely deteriorated 3/4 inch galvanized water line had completely rusted through where it connected to a 2 1/2 inch steel water main. Years of corrosion had weakened the galvanized pipe until it could no longer withstand the system's pressure, allowing water to continuously escape beneath the landscaping.

Once the damaged section was fully exposed, our technicians carefully cut out the failed portion of the 2 1/2 inch tee and replaced it using new 2 1/2 inch PVC piping and heavy duty mechanical couplings built to provide a durable, long lasting repair.

With repairs complete, we restored water service to the apartment complex and performed a final inspection. No additional leaks were found, water pressure returned to normal, and the property was back in service.

Underground water leaks often remain hidden until significant damage has already occurred. Wet landscaping, unusually green patches of grass, standing water, or unexplained increases in your water bill can all point to a failing underground water line. Addressing these issues early can help prevent costly water loss, erosion, and damage to surrounding utilities.

Whether it's a small service line or a large commercial water main, Rapid Plumbing has the experience and equipment to locate the source, excavate safely, and complete reliable underground water line repairs throughout Alamo Heights, San Antonio, Schertz, Cibolo, and the surrounding communities.
