It started with a puddle.
The homeowner noticed water collecting near the front left corner of the yard. At first, it didn't seem like much. Maybe the sprinkler had run a little too long, or perhaps it was leftover rainwater.
But as the days went on, the area never seemed to dry out.
Knowing something wasn't right, they called Rapid Plumbing to find the source before the problem got any worse.
Following the Water
When our plumber arrived, the first clue was the saturated ground. Water was steadily making its way to the surface, but the real problem was hidden beneath the yard.
The only way to know for sure was to dig.
After carefully excavating the affected area, we exposed the underground water service line and quickly found the culprit: a failed 3/4 inch transition fitting.
While it's a relatively small component, a transition fitting plays an important role by connecting different sections of the water service line. Over time, normal wear, ground movement, and changing soil conditions can weaken these fittings until they eventually begin to leak.
Fortunately, this homeowner caught the problem before it had the chance to create even more expensive damage.
Making the Repair
With the damaged fitting fully exposed, our licensed plumber removed the failed section and installed a brand new replacement to restore the integrity of the underground water line.
Before closing everything back up, we thoroughly tested the repair to make sure the leak had been completely eliminated and that the home's water pressure had returned to normal.
Once everything checked out perfectly, we carefully backfilled the excavation, leaving the yard ready for the homeowner to restore the landscaping.
Why Hidden Water Leaks Should Never Be Ignored
One of the biggest challenges with underground water line leaks is that they often go unnoticed until they begin causing visible damage.
If you notice any of the following, it could be time to have your water line inspected:
Wet or soggy areas in your yard
Grass that's noticeably greener than the surrounding lawn
A sudden increase in your water bill
Low water pressure inside your home
The sound of running water when no fixtures are being used
Catching a leak early can help prevent wasted water, higher utility bills, and costly repairs to your property.
