When a major retail location like Walmart calls us in for a drain issue, you can expect the job to be anything but small. We recently completed an extensive hydro jetting descale service on the entire building drain system -- a multi-night operation totaling over 70 hours of work.
How It Started
We kicked things off by running a camera inspection to identify the worst areas of buildup before touching anything. What we found was significant: heavy scale accumulation concentrated toward the back restrooms. To access the line, we pulled the toilet in the furthest stall of the men's restroom and began descaling from that point, working through 14 hours on the first day alone.
Working Through the Building Section by Section
Day two brought us back for another 12 hours to continue through the back restroom lines toward the front of the building. From there, we shifted to nighttime operations to minimize disruption to the store and its customers.
The front end of the building presented a unique challenge — running beneath the pharmacy, salon, vision center, and front restrooms, the drain system had accumulated heavy scale over a long stretch of pipe. To prevent flooding, we broke the work into sections, systematically clearing each area over several nights. As we worked, we discovered the buildup was severe enough that broken scale and debris had accumulated in the main manhole at the front of the building.
Tackling the Grocery and Deli Side
After completing the front section, we turned our attention to the grocery and deli side of the store. We located cleanouts to map the system layout, then jetted the entire drain from the back of the building through to the front. The freezer drain system required particular attention — heavy scale buildup in the back section took several hours to break up before we could run a final flushing pass out to the manhole.
Our Recommendations
After running a final camera inspection to confirm the lines were clean throughout the entire building, we provided the following recommendations to the customer:
Clean out the manhole, which collected significant debris from the descaling process
Service the building's grease lines and grease trap
Establish a preventative maintenance schedule to avoid future drain issues
Jobs like this are a reminder of what happens when drain systems go without regular maintenance in high-traffic commercial facilities. Consistent upkeep is far less costly — in time, money, and disruption — than a full-scale descaling operation. If your commercial property is overdue for a drain inspection or hydro jetting service, give us a call before a small buildup becomes a 70-hour project.
