When CPS Energy locks out a gas meter due to a detected leak, getting service restored quickly and safely becomes the top priority. That's exactly the situation a San Antonio, TX homeowner faced - and Rapid Plumbing was called in to diagnose and repair the problem from start to finish.
The Problem: Multiple Gas Leaks Identified by CPS Energy
CPS Energy had identified three areas of concern before locking out the meter. The fireplace gas line was leaking at the cutoff in the log lighting area. The furnace connection coming out of the wall was also leaking and needed attention. Additionally, the water heater connection showed signs of leaking at the cutoff and drip leg assembly. Each of these issues had to be resolved before gas service could be restored.
The Repairs: Fireplace, Furnace & Water Heater Gas Lines
Our technicians began by systematically addressing each identified leak. We repaired the water heater drip leg assembly and installed a new cutoff. We then repaired the furnace drip leg assembly and replaced the cutoff at the wall. The fireplace gas line was successfully capped off, eliminating that leak point entirely. All three repairs were completed with precision and care to meet safety and code standards.
Uncovering a Hidden Problem: Failed Underground Gas Line
After completing the interior repairs, we pressure tested the entire gas system inside the home and found no leaks. However, when we tested the exterior line running from the gas meter to the incoming riser, we detected a pressure drop indicating a leak in the underground supply line. We trenched 15 linear feet to expose and remove the failed existing gas line, then installed a new gas line with new risers and black pipe fittings. Upon completion, the newly installed line was tested and confirmed leak-free.
Inspections Passed & Gas Service Restored
Once all inspections were approved, CPS Energy returned to install a new gas meter and restore gas service to the home. No further leaks were detected at the time of completion.
