A hidden underground water leak can waste thousands of gallons of water before a homeowner ever notices a problem. At Rapid Plumbing, we use advanced H2 leak detection technology to pinpoint hidden water leaks without unnecessary digging. Recently, our team helped a homeowner in San Antonio, TX, after they received a notification from their water provider about unusually high water usage. Through a systematic inspection and professional H2 leak detection, we accurately located the underground leak and completed a lasting repair.

When our technicians arrived, the homeowner explained they had been alerted by the water company about excessive water consumption. We immediately began diagnosing the issue by inspecting the water meter. Even with no obvious signs of water escaping, the meter continued registering 0.10, indicating water was still flowing somewhere within the plumbing system.

Our first step was to inspect a previously repaired pressure reducing valve (PRV) to rule it out as the source of the leak. After carefully exposing the previous repair area, we confirmed the PRV installation was dry and functioning properly. We then restored the irrigation backflow system, shut off both toilets, and performed a thorough inspection of the property to ensure there were no running fixtures or visible leaks. Everything appeared normal.

With all fixtures turned off, we rechecked the water meter. The reading continued to register 0.10, confirming there was still active water usage. Since there were no visible signs of a leak, we recommended H2 leak detection to accurately locate the source without unnecessary excavation.

The following day, our technicians returned with specialized H2 leak detection equipment. After approximately two hours of testing, we successfully traced the leak to an area near the patio sidewalk and sewer cleanouts. Due to the depth of the water line and the proximity of the concrete patio, we could not immediately determine whether the damaged pipe extended beneath the slab.

Our excavation crew returned to expose the affected section of the water line. Once uncovered, we located the active leak on a 1-inch PVC water main at the transition to 1-inch PEX piping. The damaged section was removed and replaced with a professional spot repair. After completing the repair, we pressure tested the system to ensure there were no additional leaks. The test passed successfully, and the excavation was backfilled with native soil, restoring the area.

Hidden underground water leaks are not always easy to identify. If you've received a notice from your water provider about unusually high water usage, your water bill has unexpectedly increased, or your water meter continues moving while every fixture is turned off, it's time to have your plumbing system professionally evaluated.

At Rapid Plumbing, we provide professional H2 leak detection in San Antonio, TX, helping homeowners accurately locate hidden water leaks while minimizing unnecessary digging and property damage.
